Health Sciences, what is it?

The health sciences link several scientific disciplines and address issues related to nutrition, health care and management, and fitness. The focus of the health sciences is on the psychological and physical modalities of health and illness as well as their systematic relation to social conditions on both an individual and a collective level.

A degree in health sciences, which is usually dealt with in a bachelor’s degree, offers graduates a wide range of professional opportunities. History of health sciences in Germany

The health sciences first established themselves at German universities in the mid-1990s after the first health sciences faculty was founded in Bielefeld. Since then, the number of employees in the field of health sciences has risen steadily, which is primarily due to demographic change and the associated high demand for specialist staff in this industry.

What are the tasks of health scientists?

The tasks of a health scientist vary depending on the area of ​​application. As a health and nutrition advisor, you work very closely with your customers/patients, investigate the causes of health problems, and take individually tailored measures.

In the teaching area, you pass on your knowledge to students, schoolchildren, companies, municipalities, and other interested parties by conveying learned measures in a simplified manner, explaining the basics, offering help on emerging questions, or holding seminars and courses on specific topics.

If you are interested in research work, there are also some possible applications. You can carry out your research at state institutions, colleges, and universities or even in companies in the pharmaceutical industry, the latter in particular being very lucrative for many in terms of salaries. In your research work, you will largely focus on ways of promoting health and preventing disease.
